CORFINIO

This town rises on the ruins of the old "Corfinium", an important strategic place between Peligna valley and the Fucino.
In the 91 B.C.,thanks to its central position compared to the main towns of Abruzzi, Corfinio was chosen as the capital of italics. Here, the oath of the Italic League, that is of all those peoples who rose up against Rome during the social war, took place,.
It is to recall this event that since 1989 an historical, folk procession called the "historical procession of Italic peoples" has been organised.
This takes the second Sunday of August and during it more than a hundred costume characters representing the various peoples who met in Corfinio to fight against Rome go by though the village streets.
The natural features of its glorious past make Corfinio one of the most suggestive and interesting tourist destination of l'Aquila area in Abruzzi. Just outside the village is St. Pelino Basilica (old cathedral of Valva diocese) one of the most important, medieval monuments in Abruzzi. The antique museum of Corfinio which currently under restoration is to be visited together whith the remains of the waterworks and of the baths of roman age and the theatre of gladiators.
